Research shows that there is direct link between students' success and the school environment in which learning takes place. Students are more motivated to do well and to realize their full potential in schools that have a positive school climate, where they feel safe and supported.

The Durham District School Board and Thorah Central P.S. are working to ensure safe learning environments for all. We share a commitment to provide a safe learning environment for all students. In February 2010, mandatory School Climate Surveys were introduced by the Ministry of Education as part of the Safe Schools Strategy. School Climate Surveys provide a snapshot of student perception on a variety of topics related to how welcome and safe students feel in their school, including bullying within the school. As part of Thorah's commitment to providing a safe, learning environment for our students, our Safe Schools Team will use the data from the School Climate Survey that was provided for us in December 2011 to assess our success and to guide our future initiatives and practices here at Thorah Central.

Now that the cooler temperatures have arrived, please be sure your children come to school appropriately dressed for the winter. Students will be outside for a period of 40 minutes at lunch recess, except on days with extremely cold temperatures -28 with the windchill. Students should come dressed for the weather. Hats, mittens, scarves, snow pants and boots help protect your children from cold temperatures. Ensure that mittens are heavy enough to protect their hands. Please help us to keep your child safe and comfortable. It would be helpful if you could label the clothing with your child's names.
We would like to remind everyone that there is a student in our school with a severe life threatening food allergy to peanuts and other nuts. Anaphylaxis, sometimes called allergic shock, can lead to rapid death. Although this may or may not affect your child's class directly, we want to inform you so that you can send foods with your child to school that are free from peanut, peanut butter and other nut products.
