Ms. Iantomasi Welcomes you to Grade 1 website - Hello!
In Math we are playing a card game to help practice addition. You may want to play it at home. Start with cards 1 (Ace) through 6. Deal the cards out to 2 players. Each player flips a card over and tries to be the first one to say the total of the 2 cards that have been flipped over. The winner keeps the 2 cards. The game ends when someone has all of the cards.
We are encouraging students to start with the largest number and count on from there: example - 3 plus 6 - start at 6 and count on 7, 8, 9. Please try this at home. You will have fun with your kids and your kids will learn to love math. As this gets easier for your kids, start adding more cards, until you get to 10 (you don't use the face cards J,Q,K).
